Michael Johansen completed his BSc (Hons) in Sport Science and BA (Hons) in Education and Training at the University of Sunderland in England. As well as developing his academic role in Higher Education, he holds a MSc degree in Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences from Staffordshire University. His MSc thesis on support provision with anabolic-androgenic steroid users influenced his decision to continue this research as a part of a PhD.

Not only is he an Academic Tutor at the University of Sunderland, Michael is developing his expertise in Psychology. He is in the final stages of completing his PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences as well as simultaneously undertaking a MSc in Psychology, both at the University of Sunderland.

Michael’s PhD research is based on use of steroid and image enhancing drugs (SIEDs) for occupational use. The final aim will be to produce a psychological inventory to support organisations where there may be increased risk of employees using SIEDs to support training developments. Further research interests include body dysmorphia, SIED support interventions, and social media platforms for SIED drug knowledge.
