In June 2023 Alexander Kolliari-Turner was awarded his PhD from the University of Brighton. His PhD was entitled “Anabolic Androgenic Steroid doping in Weightlifting and the Summer Olympic Games alongside their impact on muscle memory and the human transcriptome”.

He worked under the supervision of Professor Yannis Pitsiladis, Dr Guan Wang and Dr Fergus Guppy. Alongside these colleagues and colleagues from the University of Rome “Foro Italico” and other research institutes he organised the Muscle Memory Anabolic Androgenic Steroid (MMAAS) Project which aimed to investigate if human muscle exhibited a memory of AAS exposure. He also, for the first time, conducted RNA-Sequencing of human whole blood and skeletal muscle samples exposed to AAS to investigate the impact of AAS on gene expression. During his PhD he also conducted research investigating the doping practices of weightlifters who were caught doping by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and, the efficacy of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) retrospectively re-testing stored doping samples to catch doping medallists at the summer Olympic Games.
