Vassilis Barkoukis is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Vassilis’ research interests involve the study of the social-cognitive determinants of performance enhancement behaviors. Vassilis strives to understand the decision making process towards doping and develop effective anti-doping interventions. To achieve this objective he has received funding from WADA (e.g., WHISTLE-DOP), IOC (projects LEGIT, CoachMADE, SMART and VIRTUE) and European Commission (e.g., SAFEYOU and SAFEYOU+, DELTS, CSI, ANTI_DIF, and GAME). SAFEYOU project has been labelled as a ‘European success story’ and project GAME developed the first serious game against doping. Vassilis is now working on project VIRAL aiming to develop the first virtual reality game for doping prevention. Furthermore, Vassilis co-authored the first meta-analysis on the psychological determinants of doping (Ntoumanis et al., 2014) and co-edited the first book on the psychology of doping (Barkoukis et al., 2015). Also he served as member of the Scientific Committee of the Greek NADO and has been collaborated with several NADOs for the development of educational material.
