Prof. Dr. Azenildo Santos‘ research is focused on recreational and professional bodybuilders using performance and image enhancing substances and anabolic-androgenic steroids for ideal bodies and aesthetic purposes, also known as “aesthetic doping”. He uses mainly qualitative methods, including ethnographic approaches, in his work. He authored his very first book and best seller on anabolic-androgenic steroids in sports in Brazil, called “O Mundo Anabólico”, written in Portuguese. This book presents the results of the thesis entitled, “Body Image and Bodybuilding Culture in three Brazilian gyms: a qualitative analysis”, which reports an ethnographic perspective and the bodybuilding culture. He did his first post-doctoral at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Clinical and Toxicological Analysis, USP; and has been a Guest Researcher at the Section for Sport Science, Department of Public Health, Aarhus University, Denmark, supported with a research grant by CAPES. He has a PhD in Public Health by Universidade Ffederal da Bahia, Social Sciences of Health, with a doctorate grant by CNPq. He made a “PhD sandwich” at Goldsmiths University, Department of Sociology, University of London, England, with the support of CAPES/PDSE. He graduated in Physical Education in FEFISA/São Paulo. Prof. Dr Santos is an Associate Member of the Group of Studies in Psychophysiology and Training Applied to Exercise and Sport – GEPTAEE / UMESP, São Paulo. He has participated in productions and lectures at various events around enhancement drugs in Brazil and in countries such as Germany, Belgium, Sweden, England and Greece. He is Co-Editor of the Special Edition “Doping in Sport and Exercise: The Brazilian Perspective”, published in Substance Use & Misuse, 2014. Prof. Dr Santos is a former athlete of Athletics (Long jump # 7.00m; 100m # 10.5s); loves coffee and weight training.
