Nicholas Athey completed a B.S. and M.S. in Criminal Justice at California State University, Long Beach and a Ph.D. in Criminology at Simon Fraser University. His research broadly explores drug policy, drug markets, organized crime, and substance-using populations. Using a mix of quantitative, qualitative, and social network analysis methodologies, his previous research has investigated the structural characteristics of an illicit PIED network, international drug trafficking of anabolic-androgenic steroids, risk factors leading to detection among cannabis cultivators, social learning and medical cannabis, and drug careers. His current research interest include the use of cannabis for performance-enhancement, global PIED markets and drug trafficking processes, and changing cannabis policies and markets.
